Summary

Description

English: Poster announcing the inauguration of the first railrway in the Mexican Republic, dated to September 14, 1850. The announcement itself states that the inauguration would take place during the Mexican national holidays, on September 16, and that the trains would begin run on September 22.

The first paragraph of the announcement's text says: "The Committee of Creditors on the road from Perote to Veracruz, and the Company in charge of the its maintenance and the construction of the railway from Veracruz to San Juan, have the satisfaction of announcing to the public that, after overcoming enormous dificulties posed by the terrain and climate of the coast, the lack of workforce, the foreign war, the envy and slander, and the intention that has existed to destroy this useful and beneficial railway work, it has been possible to put the section from Veracruz to El Molino, which has an extension of fifteen thousand seven hundred rods, in disposition to be traveled, and the trains should run from the 22nd of the present month."

This railway is the product of an authorization given by the government of President Antonio López de Santa Anna on May 31, 1842, to the Comittee of Creditors on the Road from Perote to Veracruz, which, since the early 19th century, were in charge of maintaining that road. The 13-kilometer-long railway connected the port of Veracruz with the San Juan River. The first attempt to build a railway in Mexico was made during the administration of Anastasio Bustamante in 1837, just 7 years before the creation of the first railway in England, but this attempt was not successful.
