DescriptionCarruanthus ringens mid shot Berlin Bot. Gdn.jpg
English: A mature specimen of Carruanthus ringens (Aizoaceae) flowering in the Cactus Pavilion (Xerophyte zone) of the Großes Tropenhaus of the Botanische Garten Berlin, Germany. Mid shot of this attractive succulent species, showing growth habit. The tiny genus Carruanthus, comprising only two species, is named for the Karoo semi-desert natural region of South Africa (Latinised in the genus name to form the prefix ‘Carru-‘). The specific name ‘ringens’ means ‘grinning’ - here probably in reference to a perceived similarity of the gaping habit of the toothed succulent leaves to grinning (animal) mouths.
