DescriptionCarlos Enriquez by Alice Neel, 1926.jpg
English: This painting depicts Neel’s husband, Carlos Enríquez (1900–1957), who was part of Cuba’s artistic and intellectual avant-garde. Neel and Enríquez met at the Chester Springs summer school of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1924, and they married the following summer. Neel likely made the work during their lone trip to Havana (1926–27), where she exhibited her art publicly for the first time. The portrait’s loose, bravura brushwork, typical of Neel’s early style, complements Enríquez’s debonair personality.
