English: The candelabra cactus has a size of up to 5 m in height; with branches located in its upper part, giving it the appearance of a candelabrum. It has white flowers, nocturnal, with something pink, 10 cm long; oval fruit, 7.5 cm long. It is endemic in the highlands of Chile and Peru, between 1700 and 3000 meters above sea level, in conditions of extreme dryness. It tolerates minima of -15 ºC.
The Quebrada de Cardones is located 65 kilometers from Arica and is known as the kingdom of the Candelabra Cactus. It stands out when traveling on the Ch-11 Arica-Tambo Quemado international road (Bolivia), because it is the point where the landscape changes, when the candelabra cactus appears majestically. This stream receives this name, since the branched cacti are found throughout the ravine; some of them easily reach 5 meters in height, while others are smaller and without branches. Its importance lies in the fact that cacti are found only in this part of the country, a true natural treasure, located in an area that, despite the deserts of the place, has a rich wildlife. An entire ecosystem adorned by the cactus "candelabra". |
