Summary

Description The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Tarawa (CVA-40) approaches the Pedro Miguel Locks, while transiting the Panama Canal on 31 August 1954. The carrier was en route back to the Atlantic in the final stages of her September 1953 - September 1954 World cruise. The aircraft visible belong to Carrier Air Group Three (CVG-3). The planes parked forward are Grumman F9F-6 Cougar fighters of fighter squadron VF-32 Swordsmen (tailcode "K"). In the right foreground a single F9F-5 Panther of VF-102 Roadrunners (tailcode "P", redesignated VA-36 in 1955) is visible.
