Description
English: Plate IX in Byam's Fruits of the West Indies. Red fruit on branch with leaves. Scientific name: Momordica charantia. This plant is a member of the gourd family. It produces small bitter fruit used in traditional Caribbean medicine to make a tea for a stomach tonic and blood purifier. In contemporary times, this species is being used in the treatment of HIV. Engraved and hand-colored image.
