s, well separated, first fin small with13 graduated spines. Second dorsal long, little higher in front.Anal little longer than second dorsal, with notched edge. Caudalsmall, shorter than head. Pectoral moderate, reaches into front ofanal. Ventrals small, widely set, inserted close behind preopercle. Known chiefly by its small first dorsal, subequal jaws or the lowershorter, the small wide-set ventrals, and the large scales. (Named for Hilario A. Roxas, in appreciation of his work in Phil-ippine ichthyology.) ROXASELLA FUSIFORME, new species Figure 23 Depth 8i/2; head 3y3, width 2i/5. Scales 29+1 in lateral line; 2 above, 4 below, 15 predorsal forwardto ej7es; 9 postocular scales on head; row of 12 median scales beforeventrals to isthmus. Head scaly, except muzzle and narrow medianbranchial space. Except for basal row of caudal scales fins scale-less. Lateral line axial along side of body. D. Ill—16, first spine 3% in head, third ray 214, last ray 414;A. 24, first ray 5, seventh ray 34/£, last ray 6; least depth of caudalpeduncle 5%; caudal 11/2, hind edge convex; pectoral iy2, rays 15;ventral I, 5, fin SVq in head. Color in alcohol pale brown, above variegated with three dark longi-tudinal streaks on body as 2 above lateral line and 1 below. Alsothree longitudinal streaks on each side of head. Iris grayish. Finspale. First dorsal with 2 or 3 brown spots on each spine.
