English: A depiction of a statue of a horse discovered in 1714 in the Southbroom Hoard near Devizes, Wiltshire, from the figures decorating the margins of Moll's map of "Wilt Shire" (Wiltshire), the seventh in his Set of Fifty New and Correct Maps of England and Wales... Moll copied the figure's appearance and lack of identification from Musgrave's 1719 account of the hoard.

This statue is now lost, while others from the hoard are held by the British Museum. Musgrave identified it as Figure 17 (M17) while Durham categorized it as #381. Musgrave inexplicably identified it as Bucephalus, the horse of Alexander, but modern scholars have found that votive statues of a horse or a rider and horse were instead part of Romano-British and Gallo-Roman religion. On the Continent, statues of horses were commonly associated with the goddess Epona while those in Britain are thought to be connected to a local god considered equivalent to Ares or Mars via Interpretatio Graeca or Romana. Two separate Mars or British Mars statues were recovered at Southbroom.

Notes: These Houshold Gods in number 19 with a Medal of Alexander Severus were found at the Devizes An. 1714 and are supposed to have been bury'd there in 234. the Rest for want of Room are placed in Dorset and Hampshires yat are barren of Antiquities; we being unwilling to omit such great Curiosities.
