Animal pictured died within 10-15 years of 1885, allowing the photograph to be positively dated at over 100 years old and hence in the public domain. (As a photograph of this specific dog, it is also not possible to source a different version in discussing labrador history.)

  • These are two copies of the same photo. In the former, the picture can clearly be seen to be from some printed publication; the text below is still attached reading "Buccleugh Avon (Lord Malmesbury's Tramp ex His Juno) is the ancestor o[...] modern Labradors. Notice the dense coat and thick 'otter' tail." The second image is titled simply, "Buccleugh Avon, 1885".
