English: Brunsvigia radulosa (family: Amaryllidaceae) plant in flower in grassland, ca. 15 km W of Wolmaransstad, North West, South Africa. A bulbous medicinal plant used in the treatment of several conditions and possessing also psychoactive properties. Preparations of the bulb are used to calm psychotic patients.
In a paper published in 1994 Loubser and Zietsman postulated a close link between B. radulosa and altered states of consciousness. They interpreted a rock painting at Thaba Bosiu in western Lesotho as a San depiction of this species, and suggested its historic use in inducing hallucinations and trance states - in much the same way as two other South African Amaryllids, namely Boophone disticha and Ammocharis coranica.
An attractive species - like so many Amaryllids - meriting cultivation as an ornamental.
