Summary
[edit]Description | Part of a comic strip The Bronze Bomber, published 8 March 1943 by the Los Angeles Tribune (1941–1960). A Black man, sharply dressed in a zoot suit, challenges a coroner's jury on the facts behind the lynching of two Black men. One printed page showing the comic was repurposed by artist Mildred Howard as the base layer of her collage Millenials & XYZ #IV (2014), which is in the permanent collection of the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation. Other elements of the collage obscure parts of the comic. |

Source (WP:NFCC#4) | Clipped from a JPEG image of the full collage sent to me on 6 September 2022 by its owner, the Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation. I asked for the image "under any necessary copyright restrictions." They responded without stating any restrictions. I did not ask for copyright release. |
Date of publication | 8 March 1943 |

Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) | To correct a factual error, regarding newspapers. |
Not replaceable with free media because (WP:NFCC#1) |
The collage appears to be the only surviving image of the Bomber. The Tribune began publication in 1941, but the earliest microfilm copies begin in September 1943 and the Bomber does not appear there. Searches at Library of Congress, California State Museum, and Los Angeles County Library found nothing earlier than the microfilms. The Schnitzer Foundation forwarded an inquiry to Ms. Howard, no response. |
Not replaceable with textual coverage because (WP:NFCC#1) |
A text citation to the Tribune in March 1943 cannot be confirmed, as no archive of that paper exists for that date. |
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) | The image includes publication detail, which is the factual issue needed in the article. The image shows 50% of the comic strip or 13% of the full collage. |
Respect for commercial opportunities (WP:NFCC#2) |
