Notes Historical background of the photo collection: John (Jock) Smith Steele rescued the images from a paper mill bin in Leith. Date unknown. Photographs passed to John (Jock) Smith Steel's son John (Jack) Goodall Steele who emigrated to New Zealand in 1955. John Stewart a local Leither set up OldLeithers.com website for Leithers around the world to exchange memories and keep in touch. John (Jack) Goodall Steele and his daughter Heather contacted John Stewart to pass on the photographs. These were passed onto John with information about their journey which was typed up by John Stewart. From reading additional information provided alongside the photos, it appears that a request to John Stewart was that copies of the photographs go to the 'Library'. This is where it was assumed that Capital Collections obtained copies of the photographs. Copies were also to be provided to Peter Stubbs who is the administrator of Edinphoto.com. A few of the Leith Improvement photos appear on Edinphoto.com and each one acknowledges John Stewart thereby confirming that John did provide these to Peter Stubbs' page. It is therefore likely that John also provided them to the ‘Library'. Following John Stewart's death on 9 Jan 2013 the photographs passed to Frank Ferri for safekeeping. Frank Ferri passed the photographs onto Fraser Parkinson the administrator of the Spirit of Leithers Facebook page in the hope that they maybe securely saved for the future. Fraser Parkinson contacted Centre for Research Collections at the University of Edinburgh, and this is where the photos are held today.
