Summary

Description
English: Androgyne in the Bowery, in New York City. Likely at the Paresis Hall, a gathering place for gay men and androgynes. The androgynes were considered gay men who attempted to live and dress as women, and who considered themselves at least part female. Paresis Hall was the site of what would is considered by historians to be the first transgender advocacy organization, called the Cercle Hermaphroditos. Paresis Hall allowed androgynes until a police crackdown possibly near the end of the 1890s.
