Summary

Description

Botryobasidium candicans J. Erikss.

Image location: Woodside Green Park, Gahanna, Ohio, USA

Growing on a fallen Platanus occidentalis with Pluteus hongoi observation 303453 and Cerioporus squamosus. Fruiting body mostly composed of the anamorphic stage with condia dominating but I was able to find 2 unambiguous basidia (1 clearly visible) and 1 unambiguous basidiospore. Monomitic. Hyphae smooth, simple-septate and hyaline except for the basal hyphae, which were brownish. Basal hyphae up to 10.53 µm wide. Visible basidium seemed to be 4-sterigmate and measured 15.74 × 7.46 µm with sterigmata up to 6.09 µm long. Spore was biapiculate, smooth, hyaline, inamyloid and 7.94 × 5.06 µm. Conidia didn’t seem to be produced in chains. Conidia smooth and hyaline. Conidia measurements from Piximetre: (11.4) 12.4 – 14.7 (16.7) × (8.1) 8.8 – 9.8 (10.5) µm, Q = (1.3) 1.31 – 1.6 (2.1); N = 15, Me = 13.8 × 9.3 µm; Qe = 1.5 Individual conidia: 12.44 × 9.74 µm, 14.32 × 9.79 µm, 11.42 × 8.70 µm, 13.93 × 10.54 µm, 14.09 × 9.11 µm, 13.78 × 9.48 µm, 14.69 × 9.32 µm, 16.66 × 10.00 µm, 12.44 × 9.77 µm, 14.20 × 9.18 µm, 12.11 × 8.95 µm, 16.67 × 8.06 µm, 13.08 × 8.84 µm, 13.59 × 8.84 µm, 14.06 × 8.86 µm

Recognized by sight: The conidia measurements are a little off for this and there didn’t seem to be much of the teleomorph present but this keyed out to B. candicans in the key to teleomorphs and the key to anamorphs.

Used references: Julich, W., & Stalpers, J. A. (1980). The resupinate non-poroid Aphyllophorales of the temperate northern hemisphere. North-Holland Publishing Company.

Based on microscopic features: Basidia width, spore size, width of basal hyphae, absence of clamps, spores biapiculate, conidia hyaline and smooth, size of conidia
