English: Bloomsbury: Queen Square, WC1 Queen Square is one of London's smallest garden squares and not looking particularly at its best in January. Searching on the internet for information on the square produced more than one case of a story that reads roughly like this:
"The square was originally named Queen Anne Square, after a statue in the square was wrongly identified as depicting Queen Anne. This statue is now believed to be a portrayal of Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III."
This is all a load of old baloney because the square and the first houses around it were originally built between 1716 and 1725, shortly after the death of Queen Anne in 1714, and the establishment of a statue in the square must therefore have been well within documented history. There is a connection with Queen Charlotte though insofar as King George III, in the latter stages of his incapacitating mental illness, did stay in a house in the square to be treated, and Queen Charlotte was a regular visitor.
From the Times the square was certainly known as Queen Square by 1789, well before King George III would have been living there.
