Ce blason est le résultat d'une inversion des couleurs du blason de l'évêque de Strasbourg (bande d'argent sur gueules) à l'issue de la révolte des bourgeois de la ville au Moyen-Âge qui ont pris leur indépendance face à la tutelle de l'évêque, qui conserva son pouvoir sur la campagne environnante. Le même phénomène s'est observé à Bâle, ce qui explique l'actuelle inversion des couleurs des blasons des cantons de Bâle-Ville et Bâle-Campagne.
