Summary

Description
English: GREAT BELL AT THE TEMPLE OF KOBO-DAISHI NEAR KAWASAKI. KAWASAKI is the boundary within which Foreigners are at present confined in the Yedo direction. At the ferry there is a guard of Japanese Yakonins stationed, for the purpose of preventing persons unprovided with a passport, or unaccompanied by an escort from the Custom House at Yokohama from crossing the river Logo. An interesting object in the vicinity of Kawasaki, distant about a mile or a mile and a half from the tea house where travelers generally halt, is a Temple of Kobo-Daishi, a Buddhist Saint, who has the reputation of having invented the Japanese Alphabet, and who is prayed to for protection from misfortunes—The road to this temple which is mostly paved with blocks of stone, winds principally through paddy fields, though it is occasionally bordered on either side by Orchards, where pear trees may be noticed carefully trained over trellis work about six feet from the ground. The pears grown in this neighbourhood are said to be particularly fine.
