This bighead carp was collected on the Illinois River to learn more about the anatomy and physiology of Asian carp. This information will guide the development of potential biological or chemical controls as part of an integrated pest management approach for natural resource managers.
Asian carp are invasive species that could pose substantial environmental risks and economic impacts if they become established.
Recently, Asian carp eggs, including late-stage embryos nearly ready to hatch from the egg, were identified in samples collected by our scientists in 2013 from the Upper Mississippi River as far north as Lynxville, WI. Photo: Taken in May 2011, by Jon Amberg, USGS.
