English: The identification of Claudio Monteverdi as the subject of this painting relies on a comparison to his only certain portrait, an engraving on the title page of Fiori poetici, a 1644 book of commemorative poems for his funeral (Tiroler Landesmuseum; Askew 1978, pp. 60, [62] Fig. 5).
