DescriptionBergeranthus (species or hybrid?) in flower.jpg
English: Yellow-flowered Bergeranthus: (species or hybrid?) in flower. A plant purchased from a garden centre on the outskirts of Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, U.K.
These plants were being displayed in the alpine section of the nursery. They had been potted up in ordinary compost which was far too water-retentive and had become soggy, with the result that the foliage was showing early signs of rotting off. Remedial action proved effective: the roots were gently stripped of the wet compost and the plant repotted in much grittier and freer-draining compost suitable for such a succulent xerophyte. The leaf-rot abated and the plant recovered, flowering well for several weeks.
It seems unlikely that this species (hybrid?) would thrive as an outdoor alpine in Northern England, although it might do so in the exceptionally mild climate of the Isles of Scilly off the coast of Cornwall. Likely better grown in an Alpine house with some artificial heat in the coldest weather, as would probably not survive a hard frost.
