"At Anawilundawa Bird Sanctuary - Sri Lanka, I encountered this gigantic lizard crossing the muddy path. Bengal monitor (Varanus bengalensis), the second largest lizard after the Komodo Dragon, usually wanders around the jungle in search of water during this humid season. While this great lizard paused near the vehicle for a moment and licked its mouth as if its grinning widely for a portrait shoot. Confronting this massive lizard made me feel like I was thrown back to the pre-historic era. The sizable reptile uses its forked tongue to "smell" its surroundings. It will flick its tongue repeatedly in order to track prey and detect other monitor lizards."
