Gold is addressing the 1948 CIO during which the labor federation expelled the Greater New York CIO Council, of which Gold's IFLWU Joint Council was a member. This led Gold to fight his own expulsion, as well as begin fighting a drive at the national level of the CIO to expel all communist-led or communist-dominated unions. See: Davies, Lawrence E.
