English: Bell X-1 in the National Air and Space Museum, Washington DC. The Bell X-1 was a joint NACA-U.S. Army Air Forces/US Air Force supersonic research project and the first aircraft to exceed the speed of sound in controlled, level flight.

Le X-1, premier prototype d'avion supersonique développé dans le cadre du programme de recherche de l'USAAF et la NACA et construit en 1947, était une sorte d'obus doté de minuscules ailes de stabilisation et de moteurs fusée destinés à lui faire franchir la vitesse du son.
