Description
English: After the Battle of White Sulphur Springs on August 26-27, 1863, a Union brigade commanded by Brigadier General William W. Averell retreated and evaded pursuing Confederate cavalries.

Source This is a crop of an 1864 map created by Alvin Jewett Johnson. The entire map can be found in the Library of Congress here, and shows Virginia, Delaware, Maryland & West Virginia. Text box and arrows etc. were added by TwoScarsUp based on description in the book The Battle of White Sulphur Springs by Eric J. Wittenberg and the OR XXIX part 1 of Averell on page 37 and Jones on page 43 and Corns on page 57.
