| Source | This is a rough drawing by myself of the Battlefield for the Second Battle of Kernstown. The battle occurred on July 24, 1864 in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. The drawing used two maps and one book for guidance. The maps are "Map of Region South of Winchester, Va.", which is image 16 from a series of maps titled "Union and Confederate Campaigns in the Lower Shenandoah Valley Illustrated : Twenty Years After : At the First Reunion of Sheridan's Veterans on the Fields and in the Camps of the Valley" and can be found here. Published in 1883 by William H. Whitney (1843-1909). The second map is from the American Battlefield Trust, and it can be found here. The book source is "Shenandoah Summer: The 1864 Valley Campaign" by Scott Patchan, especially chapter 10. The inset map is a portion of a 1912 map created by Sifton, Praed & Co. that has been modified. The entire map can be found in the Library of Congress map, and shows Virginia and Maryland. |
