English: During the American Civil War, the Union made some raids on the Confederate Virginia & Tennessee Railroad during May 1864. After their raids on the Virginia & Tennessee Railroad that resulted in the Battle of Cove Mountain and the Battle of Cloyd's Mountain, Union leaders George Crook and William W. Averell rejoined their commands at the community of Union, West Virginia. |

Because this map was originally created in 1861, it does not show Bland County—which was created in 1861 from portions of Wythe, Tazewell, and Giles counties. |
