Description

Bart was sworn in as field cornet of the Cape Colony's Voor-Sneeuberg Ward on 4 April 1836, and once he arrived in Natal he trekked out against the Zulus as laager commandant with the Wen/Victory Commando. He was one of five horsemen who sallied out of the Blood River laager to provoke the Zulus into charging again, see: Die Groot Trek Gedenkdagboek, 1838–1988. De Jager-HAUM Publishers (Pta). During the 1840s Piet, Bart and Wynand settled near the Crocodile River at the current Broederstroom (named after them), see: Willie Meyer ( 2012), Magaliesberg Kaleidoscope. Bart built a house at Broederstroom c.1845 which is still standing, and his grave can also still be seen, see: eGGSA Andries Pretorius followed his brothers to this area in 1848 but died 5 years later. His son M.W. Pretorius once again established himself there.
