In a 22 May 2013 announcement the Attorney-General announced that "the Creative Commons BY licence is the default licence for public Australian Government information". Guidance by the Attorney-General’s Department states: "Australian Government agencies are required to release copyright public sector information under a Creative Commons BY licence or other open content licences wherever possible".
