Français : Le Pôle Sud est désigné comme la cible principale des expéditions par la Conférence internationale de Géographie qui se tient en 1895. Sa conquête reste encore à réaliser en 1909, malgré de nombreuses tentatives. Pour son expédition menée en secret, Amundsen choisit d’arriver sur le continent antarctique par la Mer de Ross et accoste dans la Baie des Baleines. Après avoir passé l’hiver à préparer le chemin en répartissant des stocks de provisions et un balisage fiable, une équipe de cinq hommes choisis se lance. Le 14 janvier 1911, ils entreprennent l’ascension vers le plateau polaire à plus de 2800 mètres d’altitude et atteignent le Pôle le 14 décembre 1911. Ils rejoignent leur camp de départ le 25 janvier 1912.
