English: On August 24, 2020, NASA's Terra satellite captured this image of a smoke-covered California. Over 12,000 lightning strikes from massive dry thunderstorms beginning August 16th and continuing over a three-day period, with hundreds more throughout the week, have sparked up to 650 wildfires. The vast number of fires have forced CAL FIRE to group them into different complexes. The red dots on this map correspond to the different fires, which can sometimes seem to blur together because of their proximity. Heavy smoke from the fires can be seen throughout California in the vicinity, which affected California's air quality for as many as 13 days in a row.
