English: A view of the action between the French frigate Sybille and British ships on the night of 1-2 February 1783. American War of Independence (1775-83).
The Magicienne was a French ship of war which was captured by the British in 1781, and remained in British hands until 1810. The naval battle portrayed in this view took place about 80 leagues (about 356 km or 221 miles) north of San Domingo. Neither side won a victory, both ships being severely damaged. The annotation '94*' on the verso refers to the manuscript entry against Parker no.94 in the interleaved Royal Collection copy. Y le Gouaz, del. Demarteau, Sculp. During the night of January 1 to 2, 1783. 80 leagues to the N. of the debouquemens, Escorting a fleet of 17 sails from the Mole St Nicolas for Chesapeack, La Sybille was seen by the English fleet which came to precede Charles Town. she sets up her fleet at daybreak, shows her the route to the N.N.O. holds the wind preceded by the Mocker of 16 guns, and cannot prevent La Magicienne, followed by the warship L'endemion of 44 guns, from seizing one of the 2 ships, which the day before had taken leave of the fleet, The Sybille runs to meet the Magicienne, attracts her to the ESE the distance of L'endemion of 2 leagues, releases the Railleur which is at midday under the flight of this enemy frigate, and the combat abruptly edge to edge has three hours. the Railleur rises towards the south.
