Licensing

This is a faithful photographic reproduction of a two-dimensional, public domain work of art. The work of art itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
Public domain

This work is in the public domain in its country of origin and other countries and areas where the copyright term is the author's life plus 70 years or fewer.

You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States.
This file has been identified as being free of known restrictions under copyright law, including all related and neighboring rights.
The official position taken by the Wikimedia Foundation is that "faithful reproductions of two-dimensional public domain works of art are public domain".
This photographic reproduction is therefore also considered to be in the public domain in the United States. In other jurisdictions, re-use of this content may be restricted; see Reuse of PD-Art photographs for details.

Note on the public domain status of this image: This image was created in May 1938 by Trajano Augusto de Carvalho (23 July 1876 - 9 June 1942) and was published in Brazil in Nossa Marinha - Seus Feitos e Glórias (1822-1940), Odebrech S.A., ISBN 85-7048-030-X. Thus in United States copyright law it was a work created before 1978 and first published abroad in a Berne Convention country. Copyright therefore expired 70 entire calendar years years after the death of the author i.e. on 31 December 2012. In Brazilian law copyright lasted the life of the author and 70 entire calendar years (law 9.610 of 1998, Art. 46). Hence Brazilian copyright expired at the end of 2012 also.
