essful painter of signs and different paraphernaliafor the citys volunteer fire companies and fireinsurance businesses, Bowser was at the center of amajor Philadelphia industry of the nineteenth century. As a committed and freedom-loving African American,Bowser painted portraits from life of abolitionist JohnBrown and President Abraham Lincoln as well asnumerous banners used as the regimental colors forBlack troops during the Civil War. He was a majorfigure in the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows andalso designed broadsides and regalia for the organiza-tion. The Phoenix represents some of Bowsers mostcritically acclaimed work, and may be seen as consis-tent with his attempts to create a stronger America outof the catastrophe of the Civil War by fighting for theequal rights of all of its people.
