Summary
DescriptionArtemis 3 pressure vessel complete.jpg |
English: At NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Orion’s newly completed pressure vessel for the Artemis III mission is lifted out of the welding tool. The pressure vessel is the primary structure for Orion’s crew module, joined together using state-of-the-art welding by technicians from lead contractor Lockheed Martin.Progress is being made on hardware for both the Orion spacecraft and the Space Launch System (SLS)– the world’s most powerful rocket that will launch the Artemis missions to the Moon. Artemis III will fly astronauts to the Moon in the spacecraft designed to take humans to the lunar vicinity and beyond for generations to come. With the design and development phase of Orion completed on the spacecraft for the Artemis I and II missions, the Artemis III pressure vessel is the first crew module structure off the production line. In September, it will be shipped to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center where teams will begin integration of Orion’s systems.Orion, the SLS, and Exploration Ground Systems programs are foundational elements of Artemis. Artemis I will be the first integrated flight test of Orion and SLS and is targeted to launch later this year. Artemis II will follow and is the first crewed mission, taking humans around the Moon in advance of Artemis III. Through Artemis missions, NASA will land the first woman and the first person of color on the lunar surface.Image credit: NASA/Michael DeMocker |
