Purpose of use |
The image has contextual significance in that it serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a key body of work of Arlene Shechet in the 2010s when she began gaining wide recognition: her largely ceramic sculptures which tended, to varying degrees, toward figuration with human-associated forms and objects and life-size scale. They often combined biomorphic forms with unusual, finely worked finishes and evoked senses of entropy, humor and perceptions of movement that functioned formally and metaphorically. Because the article is about an artist and her work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's ability to understand this foundational body of work in her practice, which brought Shechet greater recognition through exhibitions, museum acquisitions and coverage by major critics and publications. Shechet's work of this type and this work itself is discussed in the article and by critics cited in the article. |
