Purpose of use

The image has contextual significance in that it serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a later body of work of Arlene Shechet in the 2020s: her assemblage-style sculptures involving—among other materials—ceramic, steel, concrete, wood and paint incorporating a variety of glaze and paint effects. This work has been described as polymorphous and referential, combining materials, styles (e.g., nods to modernist and formalist sculpture which she also subverts; architectural methods) and finishes in unconventional ways. It is also noted for the contrast between its organic and spontaneous character and the technical skill needed to produce it. Because the article is about an artist and her work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's ability to understand this key body of later work and practice, which brought Shechet ongoing recognition through exhibitions, museum acquisitions and coverage by major critics and publications. Shechet's work of this type and this work itself is discussed in the article and by critics cited in the article.

Replaceable?
