This new, ultra modern steel and concrete build-ing for the firm of Sherman Clay & Company,which has been in the retail music store businessin the San Francisco Bay area since 1887, was de-signed to meet the needs of the city of Oakland andsurrounding communities. It is built on an irregular lot: One side makes anobtuse angle at the street comer. Three storieswere required for the needs of the company, thefirst two floors were designed to care for the salesand display of merchandise, while the third flooris used for offices, recital rooms, repair shops, andstorage space. The building is unusual in that the owner andthe architects worked out a plan to avoid the usualbasement storage and repair shop plan, and theseactivities have been delegated to the third floorwhere better lighting and a more pleasant environ-ment for employee
