English: Hairy leaves of a young, non-flowering, Autumn shoot of the Tayu tree, Archidasyphyllum diacanthoides (Less.) P.L.Ferreira, Saavedra & Groppo (formerly known as Dasyphyllum diacanthoides (Less.) Cabrera). The genus name element ' -dasyphyllum' is a compound of the Greek elements δασύς ( dasus ) 'hairy' and φύλλον ( phyllon ) 'leaf', the aptness of which is clearly to be seen here. Note also contrast between soft, hairy, pale green foliage of young shoot and leathery, more glabrous, darker green foliage of older growth of same plant, visible in the background of this image. The Tayu / Trevo plant is an unusual member of the daisy family Asteraceae, in that it can grow to be a tree 15m in height ( most Asteraceae are herbs or shrubs ). In the folk medicine of its native Chile its bark is believed to be an excellent remedy ( both topical and oral ) for blunt trauma.
Subject is a container-grown specimen of a species which is rare in cultivation and hard to obtain in the United Kingdom.
