English: Appalachian Plateau near Athens in southeast Ohio. Plateau characterized by low, rolling hills and slow moving rivers until glaciers disturbed regional streams. The resulting changes caused streams to erode (cut) downward and thereby increase valley depths. As a result, plateau is much rougher now than before the glaciers. Streams also became steeper and many old streams were abandoned in favor of new streams flowing in a different direction.
