Summary

Description

Another photo from the Catalogue of the Musée Luxembourg, Paris, found on Internet Archive and cleaned up. The veined marble statue is now in the Musée d'Orsay, along with many other works from the Luxembourg collection. You'll find lots of pictures of the statue in the Orsay by searching Flickr, here, and here.

Mercury creates the caduceus, the symbol of healing that you'll often see represented on medical facilities, by causing a pair of snakes to twine around a stick. It's a curious foreshadowing of the DNA double helix.

Idrac, as you'll see from the dates above, died at less than 36 years of age. Wikipedia doesn't state the cause, but it's a real shame that such a talented artist should have died so young.
