DescriptionAntarctic Ice shelves drive the formation of supercooled seawater.png
English: A schematic that shows how the pressure-dependent depression of the freezing point of seawater can lead to the formation of supercooled seawater near the surface adjacent to large, thick, floating Antarctic ice shelves. Where seawater interacts with ice, it must come to the equilibrium in-situ freezing point at that depth. If the water then moves upwards in the water column, its temperature will be below the in-situ freezing point at these shallower depths - it will be supercooled. This mechanism is driven by thermohaline circulation, and may be referred to as an "ice pump". Supercooling (being slightly below the in-situ freezing point) drives the formation of anchor ice on the seafloor adjacent to ice shelves. No horizontal scale is provided or appropriate; the horizontal dimension represented in this schematic may be as large as 1000 km if representing the the Ross Ice shelf and Ross Sea. Also, note annual sea ice thickness may be 1-3m, which is not well-represented here.
