DescriptionAnnan, Mote of Annan. Motte and Bailey Castle on right.jpg
English: River Annan, looking upstream from Annan Bridge. Annan, Mote of Annan, motte and bailey castle on right. Refer : http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/66490/details/annan+mote+of+annan/ Bruce Street branches off the High Street at the War Memorial. It leads to the public park where the mounds of Robert de Brus' 12th century motte and bailey (covered with trees on the right of the photograph) still tower impressively over the site of the original river crossing. This was the first of the castles built by this powerful Norman dynasty, who gave the settlement of Annan baronial burgh status. A c.1560 sketch of Robert the Bruce's "Annan Castle" appears to show a castle described as a motte and bailey next to what appears to be a broch beside the river. https://archive.org/stream/seventhreportwit00scotuoft#page/n39/mode/1up
