Summary

Description

Annaghdown, County Galway, Ireland

English: Ruins of a rectangular building, looking east. These are probably the foundations of an early church which is the oldest at the site of Annaghdown. According to Peter Harbison, the ruins still display cyclopean masonry and could have belonged to the nunnery. (See Peter Harbison: A Thousand Years of Church Heritage in East Galway, ISBN 1-901658-58-9, p. 36). These ruins are located 10 meters south of the ruins of the Preomonstratensian Abbey of St. John the Baptist de Cella Parva. In the E-W direction its length is 10m, its width 3.55m. (See entry 3292 in the Archaeological Inventory of County Galway: Volume II – North Galway, ISBN 0-7076-6179-X.)
