etwo, with the assistance of a chamber-maid, proceeded to chloroform andoperate. A total abdominal hysterectomy was performed. The woman waskept under the operation for two hours. The night following the operation thepatient died suddenly. The autopsy revealed two imprudences on the part ofthe operator. The operator had left, in his bungling haste, a pair of forceps inthe abdominal cavity, and a hemorrhage had carried off the unfortunate pa-tient. ****** Dr. Lasalette was taken into court and condemned to two months in jail and500 francs fine. Badly advised, he carried his case to the Court of Appeals.This court raised his punishment to three months in jail and sustained the fine.The feeling against the unusual belly-splitting now going on in ContinentalEurope is very bitter. There is a good chance that an enactment will bepassed forcing the gynaecological specialist to have the sustaining opinion of aregular surgeon and a general practitioner before any operation shall be per-formed.
