In the foreground are the fishing-boats with their highly decorated sails, so often shown inVenetian paintings. Behind them looms up the majestic dome of the church of Santa Maria dellaSalute on the Grand Canal, which is shown on the right of the picture, just beyond the entrance to the Dogana, or Custom House, which supports the great ball on which is poised the figure of Fortune.This is the focal point of the commerce of a city which was once the commercial centre of theworld.
