DescriptionAlfred Eisenstaedt at Gay Head Light - 1989.jpg
English: Alfred Eisenstaedt, world renowned photographer, at the Gay Head Light on the island of Martha's Vineyard off the coast of Massachusetts. Eisenstaedt photographed the island's lighthouses over the years beginning in the 1950s. He was a staunch supporter of the effort by Vineyard Environmental Research, Inst. (VERI) to save three of the island's lighthouses during the 1980s, and was the focus of three VERI lighthouse fundraisers. Eisenstaedt was close friends with William E. Marks, the founder and President of VERI.
One of Eisenstaedt's famous photographs of the Gay Head Light depicts the lighthouse with the attached three-story Gambrel-style Keeper's house, along with a garden that contained a scarecrow. In August 1995, about two weeks before his death, Eisenstaedt was the center of a VERI lighthouse fundraiser at the Edgartown waterfront home of legendary auto magnate, Ernie Boch.
