This is a photo of a Royal Air Force airman in uniform who died in 1942 and whose posthumous award of the George Cross was gazetted in July 1942. Many photos of service personnel generally and George Cross recipients in particular were provided to the media by the armed service for publication in newspapers and pictorials at the time. They have been since been republished in reference works such as This England’s The Register of the George Cross and online. This is a public domain photo with no suggestion that it is not free.
