Alabama-Coushatta Reservation welcome sign

The Alabama-Coushatta Reservation is east of Livingston, Texas, USA (in the Big Thicket area). The reservation is home to the Alabama and Koasati (Coushatta) Indians, which was formed after they were forced southward from current-day Alabama by the United States around the turn of the 17th century. Other Koasati live in Louisiana.

About the symbol displayed on the welcome sign:

  • twin water-fowls = 2 tribes, day/night, sky/earth, life/death, man/woman, beginning/end
  • 2 wise ones
  • egg/seed center = the creator
  • 4 protruding diamond shapes = the four elements (air, water, earth, the sprout)
  • swastika = four directions/seasons/phases of man
  • 7 feathers on wise ones = 7 fires/pipes
  • cultural numbers represented in symbol are 2, 4, 7, 49
