Photograph of Mercedes Nolasquez, an Agua Caliente (Cahuilla-Cupeño) Indian basket maker, in California, ca.1900.
She is sitting on the ground on an animal pelt with a basket shaped like a shallow bowl with a checkered pattern on her lap.
The basket is incomplete as a several long straws stick out of the rim. An awl lays in the basket. A larger basket filled with grain or beans sits at left. Another smaller basket sits at right.
She is wearing a light-colored shirt and a plaid skirt. Behind her is the intertwined branch wall of a dwelling[?].
