Olivillo (Aextoxicon punctatum, Aextoxicaceae) has male and female trees. The protologue indicates that the species is dioecious, but does not specify whether or diclino monoica or diclino dioica. Well the species is diclino dioica, ie has male flowers trees with abortion of female part and other trees with female flowers by abortion of the male part. I observed the male and female trees and I have not been able to find any difference, except that the inflorescences of male trees is a large but sparse cluster instead inflorescences female trees are compressed and few flowers and apparently trees males are more abundant than females trees, at least in the population of cerro Santa Inés, and Punta Curaumilla in Valparaiso. El olivillo (Aextoxicon punctatum, Aextoxicaceae) posee árboles machos y hembras. El protólogo indica que la especie es dioica, pero no especifica si es diclino dioica o diclino monoica. Pues bien la especie es diclino dioica, es decir posee árboles con flores masculinas por aborto de la parte femenina y otros árboles con flores femeninas por aborto de la parte masculina. He observado los árboles machos y hembras y no he podido encontrar ninguna diferencia salvo que las inflorescencias de los árboles machos es un racimo grande aunque poco denso, en cambio las inflorescencias de los árboles hembras son comprimidas y de pocas flores y al parecer los árboles machos son mas abundantes que los árboles hembras, por lo menos en las poblaciones del cerro Santa Inés, y punta Curaumilla en Valparaíso |
